Sustainability In Fashion Relies On Embracing Diversity
Intersectional environmentalism is an inclusive version of environmentalism that advocates for both the protection of people and the planet. It identifies the way in which injustices happening to marginalized communities and the earth are interconnected. It brings injustices done to the most vulnerable communities, and the earth, to the forefront and does not minimize or silence social inequality.

“From the design phase, all the way through to the end of a garment's life cycle, the process is wasteful in nature but many organizations are changing this. Organizations like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation have been doing incredible work in creating a more circular economy, but far too often, BIPOC communities have been left out of the conversation, despite being the most harmed by the negative effects of climate change. The only way we can tackle this issue is by decolonizing fashion and elevating the voices of folks that have been traditionally ignored by the fashion industry, and within the sustainability movement in general.
The major tenets of sustainability have always been a part and parcel for most of us in BIPOC communities. Reducing and reusing has been a way of life for many generations, long before they became the often forgotten phrases in the waste reduction hierarchy. Building upon this ancestral experience in resource protection is imperative if we intend on changing fashion for the better.”

QUESTION how I can contribute to the intersectional environmentalist movement as a consumer? Here's how you can make an impact!

SELECT resale but if you have to buy new buy from brands and support businesses of the BIPOC community. Here is a list of 8 sustainable brands you'll love by women of color.

USE your resources and educate yourself. Read Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry by Camille T. Dungy, listen to The Yikes Podcast, listen to Decolonizing Fashion: In Conversation with Aditi Mayer, and take the Intersectional Environmentalist Pledge to learn more about what steps you can take to achieve both climate change and social injustice.

Create a NEW-USE for already owned clothing. Being able to afford eco-friendly clothing is not what defines sustainability. It is a cultural movement based on the way you consume. Before you buy something new, think about swapping clothes with your friends, or buying vintage or from a secondhand store. When discarding your clothes, look for a place where they can be recycled instead of shipped to African countries where they are left to rot and damage the economy. Instead of buying a new sweater, why not alter the one you have, extending its lifetime?

Keep RECYCLING old habits and brands that you previously supported if it doesn't align with your social innovation views. Support the Slow Factory Foundation a service organization working at the intersection of Climate & Culture through global movements and education, Custom Collaborative a workforce development program that trains and supports women from low-income and immigrant communities to launch fashion careers and businesses, the Clean Clothes Campaign a global network dedicated to improving working conditions and empowering workers in the global garment and sportswear industries, and Fashion Revolution a global movement calling for greater transparency in the fashion industry and works towards creating an industry that values people and the planet over profits.
